Wheelchair Measurements

how to measure the width of your wheelchair for a WAV

Measuring Your Wheelchair Width

Width measurement:

  • Position the wheelchair on a flat surface.
  • Using a measuring tape, measure the width of the wheelchair across the widest part. This typically includes the width of the wheels.
  • Ensure the measurement is taken accurately from one side of the wheelchair to the other.

This measurement ensures your wheelchair will be able to fit on the ramp and also the inside of the vehicle.

Measuring Your In-Wheelchair Height

Height Measurement (while seated):

  • Sit comfortably in the wheelchair.
  • Have your legs in a position of how you will be sitting whilst travelling in the vehicle
  • Measure the length from the tip of your feet/toes to the very back of the wheelchair (be sure to factor in the length of the handles too)

This measurement will allow you to see if you’ll have adequate headroom whilst inside the vehicle.

Measuring Your In-Wheelchair Length

Length Measurement (while seated):

  • Sit comfortably in the wheelchair.
  • Extend your legs naturally.
  • Measure the length from the tip of your feet/toes to the very back of the wheelchair (be sure to factor in the length of the handles too)

This measurement is to tell if the wheelchair and its user can fit inside the vehicle once the back door has been closed. It also ensures the wheelchair user will have adequate leg/foot room.

TOP TIPS:

  • For accurate measurements, it’s advisable to have someone assist you.
  • Double-check all measurements to ensure they are accurate.
  • When measuring, ensure the wheelchair user is in their typical seated position to get the most accurate dimensions.
  • These measurements are crucial when buying or renting a wheelchair accessible vehicle to ensure a proper fit and comfort.

By following these simple steps, you can obtain accurate measurements of a wheelchair for purchasing or renting a suitable wheelchair accessible vehicle.

Measuring The Internal Width

Internal Width Measurement:

  • Enter the wheelchair accessible vehicle and position yourself where the wheelchair would typically be placed.
  • Using a measuring tape, measure the width inside the vehicle.
  • Be mindful of any equipment or folded seats that may reduce the width inside the vehicle.
  • Ensure the measurement is taken accurately from one side of the interior to the other (factoring in any parts of the vehicle which may get in the way of the wheelchair entering smoothly)

Measuring The Internal Height

  • Using a measuring tape, measure the height from the floor of the vehicle to the roof (please take from the lowest point, or where you feel your wheelchair will be positioned)
  • Ensure the measurement is taken on the inside of the vehicle.
  • This measurement helps ensure that there is sufficient headroom for the wheelchair user inside the vehicle.
