Over Ring Accelerator
An over-ring accelerator is a vehicle adaptation for drivers with mobility impairments. It features a ring on the steering wheel that is pushed in to accelerate the vehicle. A separate lever located behind the steering wheel is used for braking. This setup provides safer and easier control for individuals who are unable to use foot pedals.
Left Foot Accelerator
This adaptation is for those who are unable to use their right leg for the pedal. This switches the accelerator pedal to the left of the brake pedal, allowing the driver to use their left leg to accelerate and brake.
Often, this is done with a flip pedal system, so you can flip between having the accelerator pedal on the right or left side.
Steering Ball
Often paired with infrared controls, this is a simple but effective mobility adaptation. The steering ball simply clips onto any part of the steering wheel and allows the user to more easily turn the steering wheel.
Infrared Controls
Often paired with a steering ball, infrared controls are a small device which clips onto the steering wheel and allows the driver to control various functions of the car. It is like a small remote control with essential vehicle functions, allowing the driver to not have to reach as much around the vehicle.
Push/Pull Hand Controls
This is one of the most popular mobility adaptations. There is a push/pull handle on the right side of the steering wheel. Pushing the handle brakes the vehicle and pulling it accelerates the vehicle. There is also a small toggle to control the indicators.
This adaptation is often paired with a steering wheel ball to make turning easier.
Even with this adaptation fitted, you are still able to use the traditional foot pedals.
Boot Hoist
A boot hoist is a great adaptation with many uses. It is aimed for those who have a heavy wheelchair or mobility scooter which needs to be lifted in and out of a vehicle’s boot space. It works like a mechanical arm and winch to take heavy items in and out of the boot.
For those with mobility issues, the hoist can also be used for other items, perhaps other equipment for example. This hoist is operated with a remote control on the inside of the boot.
