Pedal guards are a simple adaptation to any vehicle but can drastically improve safety. They are a guard (often a sheet plate of metal) which is positioned in the footwell of the driver’s side to block the pedals of the vehicle.
Some vehicles have been fitted with other adaptations which allow alternative control of the vehicle’s acceleration and braking, a push/pull hand control adaptation for example. As the vehicle’s acceleration and braking is being done by the driver’s hands, there is no need for the pedals anymore.
Driving with both can be dangerous as the driver’s feet may accidently press one of the pedals they did not mean to press. This is where the pedal guard’s simple design comes into effect and prevents the accidental pushing of pedals.
